Mystic Woods Creations

About Me

I make sawdust. I use a lathe, a machine that spins a block of wood on an axis, not unlike the way a potter's wheel turns clay. With various tools I shape the wood to form my art.
Although I have been working in the medium of wood for over 30 years building small projects and generally just enjoying learning about wood and what I could do with it, it was not until 10 years ago that I discovered the thrill and addiction wood-turning has become. The more I learn, the more I want to discover. I am always looking for new ideas, concepts, and processes. There is a lifetime of learning to be found by looking for new things.
Wood-turning is a time-honored craft going back centuries. I started by making writing instruments and moved on to small bowls, boxes, peppermills, hollow forms. I dabbled in as much as I could find. I am focusing more on bowls of various sizes, hollow forms such as vases, boxes, and urns, and unusual artistic pieces. I use a variety of woods often combining them to create a unique look. I also use carving and piercing to accomplish this goal. Though I do not paint my wood, I have been known to inlay bits of turquoise to bring out features or to create an effect.
I use a variety of woods from a wide array of sources. I do not cut down a tree to the sake of using it to create something. I primarily use found wood. That is wood that I find on the side of the road, in the for forest where I live, wood from tree cutters, and other similar places. There is wood to be found in streams, on the beach, pretty much anywhere you can think. Occasionally I find a piece or two in my driveway, put there by someone while i am out.
My work can be seen in many craft fairs in my area, Artisans Gallery and Botanic and Lux in Santa Cruz, CA, Henry Cowell State Park Nature Store in Felton, CA., and in La Boutique in Moss Landing, CA and now on my website. All items are one of a kind and are for sale!
